Open files in the app

The viewer

Choosing a file in Within Drive opens it in a full-screen viewer inside LinkedWithin. You never leave the folder you were in, and the arrows step through the other files in that folder. On the web the arrow keys do the same.

What opens in the app

• PDF: scroll through the pages, zoom, rotate, select and search the text. A password-protected PDF asks you for its password.
• Word (.docx): laid out as a page.
• Excel (.xlsx): a grid with sheet tabs and calculated values.
• Text, Markdown and CSV: plain text, rendered Markdown, or a grid for CSV.
• Photos: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP, TIFF and iPhone HEIC photos. Pinch or scroll to zoom, drag to pan, rotate.

Video and audio: download to play

You can store video (including iPhone .mov files) and audio, rename and reorder them, and download them any time, but they don't play inside the app yet. Open one and you'll see Download to watch or Download to listen with a Download button. The file comes back exactly as you uploaded it and plays in your usual app.

Looking for a way to watch YouTube, TikTok or Vimeo links inside LinkedWithin? That is the Within Player, which works with pasted links rather than stored files.

Formats we can't show yet

PowerPoint, older Office files (.doc, .xls, .ppt), OpenDocument, Pages, Numbers and Keynote are stored safely but can't be shown in the browser. The viewer tells you why and offers Download so you can open the file in its own app.

The file is fetched directly from storage through a private link that expires within 15 minutes, so save it straight away rather than copying the link.

Good to know

Opening a file counts the part actually shown against your monthly download allowance, so a few pages of a long PDF cost only those pages. Uploading and browsing folders never count.
